The Experimental Study on Obstractive Sialadenitis induced by Ligation of Salivary Duct in Albino Rats

Abstract
Mucocele has been known as retention cyst lined with epithelium and caused by an obstruction of the excretory duct. Just about this controversial topic, many investigators have studied whether mucocele is true cyst or not with human specimens and experiments.
In review of many authorized and authentic reports, mucocele is appeared not as true cyst, but as pooling of saliva surrounding with granulation tissue or connective tissue. On this bases, the experiment was started.
Some experimental purposes.
It¢¥s hoped that experimental ligation would shed some light on the pathogenesis of mucoceles. To observe whether obstruction per se can lead to adenitis.
It¢¥s also hoped that the changes following experimental ligation are comparable with those which
seen in surgically removed human cases of obstructive adenitis.
To gain these goals, 30 sound Albino rats, which weigh about 200 grams, were sacrificed. The operative technique selected as the most efficient was tested in pilot study. Left side: Ligation with 3-0 black silk
Right side: Preserved as control.
Animals were sacrificed at 10. 20. and 30 days postoperatively. Fixed in 10% Formalin and embedded in paraffin, cut serially and with H. E stain.
As a result,
1. Mucocele was not formed.
2. Ligation per se caused adenitis.
3. Following ligation, the secretory cells degenerated or showed less of secretory granules and vacuoles.
